What to Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak

Propane is odorless in its natural state. To help ensure your safety, a chemical odorant is added, so leaks can be easily detected. The smell is strong, unpleasant, and is often compared to skunk spray, rotten eggs, or sulfur. If you notice this odor in or around your home, please follow these critical steps:

1. NO FLAMES OR SPARKS

Immediately extinguish all smoking materials and open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can cause a fire or explosion.

2. LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY

Evacuate everyone from the building or area where you suspect a gas leak.

3. SHUT OFF THE GAS

If it is safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).

4. REPORT THE LEAK

From a neighbor’s home or another location away from the suspected gas leak, contact Densmore immediately. If you are unable to reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.

5. DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA

Stay out of the area until Densmore, an emergency responder, or a qualified service technician confirms that it is safe to return.

6. GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED

Before using any propane appliances, have Densmore or a qualified service technician inspect your entire system to ensure it is leak-free.

How to Stay Ahead of Propane Emergencies

The most effective way to manage propane emergencies is to help prevent them from occurring in the first place and keep your household well-prepared. By developing good safety habits, you can reduce risks and help ensure the safety of your loved ones and home.

Learn How Your Tank Works

Take the time to understand how your propane system functions, including the location of the shutoff valve. Additionally, ensure timely propane deliveries when your tank dips below 30% full to avoid no-heat emergencies and potential damage to your propane equipment.

Teach Your Household

Walk everyone in your household through the essentials of propane safety. Ensure they can recognize the odor, know how to shut off the gas supply, and are aware of who to contact in the event of a potential propane-related emergency.

Schedule Regular Maintenance

Annual tune-ups and routine maintenance are essential for ensuring your propane equipment operates safely and efficiently. Densmore offers comprehensive propane equipment maintenance, tune-ups, and repairs to help you address potential issues before they become larger problems.
